MAMAM AFRICA: MIRIAM MAKEBA LEGACY LIVES ON
November 23, 2024 - 06:05 PM
Same date 92 years ago, in Prospect Township, near Johannesburg, South Africa, a South African-born singer who became known as Mama Afrika, Miriam Makeba was born. (died November 10, 2008, Castel Volturno, near Naples, Italy). She is one of the world’s most prominent Black African performers in the 20th century. The daughter of a Swazi mother and a Xhosa father, Makeba grew up in Sophiatown, a segregated Black township outside of Johannesburg, and began singing in a school choir at an early age. She became a professional vocalist in 1954, performing primarily in southern Africa. By the late 1950s, her singing and recording had made her well-known in South Africa, and......
BIOGRAPHY OF MOUNK'A PAMELO
November 23, 2024 - 02:00 PM
Biography of Mounk'a, Pamelo(M'Bemba, Yves André "Pablito") Congolese singer and song writer; born Brazzaville, May 10, 1945; died Brazzaville, Jan. 14, 1996.Brazzaville-born Pamelo quenched his thirst for music in Kinshasa. He loved the sounds of African Jazz, and he made the twenty-minute ferry ride across the Congo River to see them play whenever he could. He had been composing songs in the popular Congolese rumba style, some of which he eventually gave to the band's young new singer Tabu Ley Rochereau. At least one of them, "Paquita," became a hit for the band. Pamelo, then known as "Pablito," was set to join African Jazz himself when the band suddenly split apart. Back......

THE BAOBAB OF BANGO
November 23, 2024 - 07:19 AM
With 70 years on stage, blowing the saxophone and singing to entertain revelers, Mzee Ngala is undoubtedly a musical baobab in the country. The huge fig has survived turbulent winds that brought others down. He has been there and seen it all. He could be the oldest performing musician in the country. That's not all he pioneered a genre, made it popular, and even got it ingrained in the coastal cultures to become an integral part of their social-cultural heritage. It isn't strange to hear a local say 'Harusi si harusi bila Bango', (a wedding is incomplete without bango). We trace the genesis of the musical journey of Mzee Ngala to 1955, when he dropped out of Shimo La Tewa Secondary......
THE MAGNET THAT PULLS
November 22, 2024 - 07:00 PM
THE MYSTERIOUS MAGNET THAT PULLS.When veteran Telezaire broadcaster Lukunku Nsampu asked Franco who was on stage, while pointing at the late Mayaula Mayoni, Franco responded by introducing Mayaula as a former footballer who went to Europe for higher education and then converted to be a musician. Lukunku: Amoni mosolo (He's seen money in music?) Franco: Mosolo te. Elengi! (Not money but pleasure) Mayaula Mayoni was born in Kinshasa in 1946 and began his education in the local schools. He was a great footballer and featured for the country's team AS Vita and even the national team Leopards, which played in the FIFA World Cup of 1974. He later joined his father, who was a......
PAPA NOEL: GUITAR GENIUS, NOT A CHRISTMAS STORY
November 22, 2024 - 02:30 PM
PAPA NOEL: GUITAR GENIUS, NOT A CHRISTMAS STORY. A lie that's told repeatedly, finally wears a gown and graduates into a truth, especially if an authentic truth is coming out, from any direction of trust. Was the fallen giant of Congolese music, Papa Noel aka Nedule Montswet born on Christmas as oftentimes alleged? No! Papa Noel, popularly known as Ya Nono, especially by his peers, told the Diamant Noir (Black Diamond TV) that he wasn't born on Christmas day of 1940 or of any other year. Of course, no one knows anyone better than themselves, as such, it is very sad to conclude that Papa Noel wasn't born on Christmas. This relegation comes with a domino effect on other popular......

MOSE-KONZO
November 18, 2024 - 04:07 AM
MOSE-KONZO this is a mid-1970s classic by Tabuley's Afrisa, one that exemplifies the depth of talent at this orchestra that had at the time, a few years ago made a maiden appearance for an African band at the famed Olympia in Paris. The soloist in this song was Maitre Dizzy aka Pierre Mandjekou Lengo. He had joined this band after stint with his own Kossa Kossa. He was at this time Afrisa's first choice soloist but the band also had Dino Vangu. The band had two rhythmsts as well around this time, Bopol and Lokassa. Definitely, at that time Lokassa was the master of the accompaniment, as the Congolese call the rhythm guitar. Lokassa did the rhythm of the song, as Bopol took up the......
DO MUSICIANS DIE YOUNG?
November 16, 2024 - 10:47 PM
DO MUSICIANS DIE YOUNG? In musical discourses, it isn't strange to hear discussants say musicians die young. This can be attributed to the norm, that death isn't welcome at age, and kith and kin of the bereaved will also watch despair even if the deceased is a centenarian. There is no appropriate time for death as man will always wish to live longer, possibly because of the uncertainty about the eventuality of man, after death. The pertinent question here is, do musicians die young as alleged? Let's have a musical safari around Africa to either confirm or debunk the myth. From down South, we choose two three superstars representing three genres, reggae, jazz, and......
