Eskill Lohento (1951–2006) was the powerhouse lead vocalist and a founding pillar of the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, one of Africa’s most prolific and influential bands. Known for his commanding voice and ability to bridge the gap between traditional Beninese Vodún rhythms and modern styles like Afrobeat, Funk, and Congolese Rumba, Lohento was the primary interpreter for a massive catalog of approximately 500 recordings. Alongside bandleader Mélomé Clément, he helped define the "All Powerful" sound of the 1970s West African music scene, leaving behind a legacy of iconic hits like Gbeti Madjro and Noumbi Lé before his passing just prior to the band's global resurgence in the late 2000s.
