Awurama Badu

Awurama Badu, born in 1945 in Banko, Sekyere Kumawu District of the Ashanti Region, Ghana, was a celebrated highlife musician. Also known as Ewurama Badu, she was recognized for her compelling stage performances and hit songs in the Ghanaian music scene. Her career began at a time when the highlife music industry was heavily dominated by men, making her one of the few women who successfully carved out a significant place for themselves. Her hard work yielded several popular tracks, including "Medofo Adaada Me," "Komkom," "Emelia," "Odo Tie Me Nni Obiara," and "Obaatan Refre Ne Mma." Her songs were often praised for being both educational and inspirational, promoting virtues like patience and love. Awurama Badu was honored for her contributions to the arts by organizations such as Action Senior High & Technical School in 2015 and the non-governmental organization Values for Life in 2016. She had four children—two sons and two daughters. Her final public performance was at Citi FM's Night of Music of Ghanaian Origin in 2013, and she made her last public appearance in July 2017 at a GHAMRO meeting. Awurama Badu passed away at the age of 72 on October 26, 2017, at the Effiduase Government Hospital in the Ashanti Region after an illness.
