George Phiri was a master Malawian guitarist and composer who shaped Southern African jazz and afro-pop. He first gained recognition with the Zimbabwean band Wells Fargo before becoming a core member of the supergroup Mahube. His distinct, intricate guitar style blended seamlessly across traditional rhythms, Congolese rhumba, and modern acoustic arrangements. Phiri is especially remembered for his celebrated collaboration with Congolese singer Kampi Moto, which earned them a SAMA nomination for their album Acha Masimango. Throughout his career, he remained a vital bridge between Malawian musical roots and broader African fusion.
