Gnonnas Pedro

Gnonnas Pedro, born Gnonnan Sossou Pierre Kouassivi in Benin, was a towering figure in West and Central African music who became affectionately known as "The Baobab of Benin." Emerging in the 1960s with his group Pedro y Sus Panchos, he mastered the Afro Latin rhythms sweeping the continent before completely transforming his native sound. He famously modernized Agbadja, a traditional folk rhythm from southwestern Benin, by fusing it with heavy Cuban grooves, blues, and highlife, later recording regional anthems alongside his renowned Dadjes Band.

Toward the later half of his career, Pedro achieved global acclaim as a lead vocalist for the legendary pan African salsa supergroup Africando, bringing his incredible linguistic flexibility and showmanship to international stages. Capable of effortlessly singing in Spanish, French, English, and various West African languages, he remained a vibrant, dancing icon until his passing in 2004. Today, he is remembered not only as a pioneer of West African salsa and Modern Agbadja, but as a legendary cultural ambassador for his homeland.
