John Ngereza

John Ngereza was a legendary Tanzanian guitarist and vocalist who became the defining leader of Les Wanyika during its most prolific years. Originally a member of Orchestra Bwambe Bwambe, he joined Les Wanyika shortly after its 1978 formation in Nairobi, eventually taking over the band’s leadership following the departure of Issa Juma. Ngereza was the creative force behind massive hits such as "Jessica," "Barua Yako," and "Afro," and his intricate guitar style helped refine the band’s signature fusion of Tanzanian rumba and Kenyan pop. Under his guidance, the group remained a dominant force in the East African music scene for two decades. Ngereza passed away on February 11, 2000, leaving a legacy as one of the most influential figures in the history of the regional rumba canon.
