Lawrence Awino, better known as Awino Lawi (Okew gi Obondo), was a giant of Luo Benga.
Born in Gem, Siaya, he learned guitar as a schoolboy. In 1976, he cut his teeth with Dr. Collela Mazee in the Victoria "B" Kings, building a reputation for his fast, driving rhythm guitar.
Lawi later started his own band, Victoria "C" Kings, becoming a master storyteller and bandleader. You probably know him best for timeless hits like Rose Adhiambo and Msafiri Mkafiri.
