Nguza Mbangu, famously known as Field Marshall Nguza Viking, is a titan of East African rumba who played a pivotal role in the evolution of Tanzanian muziki wa dansi. After making his mark as a virtuosic lead guitarist for Orchestra Maquis Original, he ascended to the band's leadership in 1985 following the death of Chinyama Chianza, contributing to legendary hits like "Mpenzi Luta." He later revitalized the International Orchestra Safari Sound (IOSS) in the early 1990s, where he introduced the Rashikanda Wasaa style and penned the socially significant hit "Mageuzi." Despite a high-profile hiatus from the industry due to legal challenges, his eventual return and enduring legacy as a composer and bandleader remain central to the history of Congolese-inspired music in the region.
