Sammy Muraya (born in Subukia, Nakuru County, and died in 2005 in Nairobi) was an exceptionally talented Kenyan Benga musician and a legendary guitar virtuoso, celebrated for his rapid fingerpicking and modern arrangements. Dropping out of school early to chase his musical passions, his career exploded following the release of his 1979 hit "Kanyoni Kanja," showcasing a dazzling, lightning-fast guitar style that quickly set a new standard for live instrumentation. Muraya became a dominant chart presence in the 1990s, with his massive hit "Mama Kiwinya" selling over 50,000 physical copies and establishing him at the apex of the regional music industry. His songs blended high-energy, danceable instrumentation with deep social commentary, frequently serving as cautionary tales to contemporary youth about city life, financial pitfalls, and quick fame. He is remembered as a musical pioneer whose distinctive rhythmic legacy lives on through his music and the continued performances of his son, Sammy Muraya Junior.
