Bavon Marie-Marie Siongo
May 19, 2024 - 07:00 PM
Bavon Marie-Marie Siongo traversed Congolese music history at full throttle. In only twenty-six years, a lot of things happened: he matured, made himself a name despite being in the shadow of a very famous elderly brother, and posthumously became a musical icon amongst the souls who lit up the skies in the 1970s. Yet, his story leaves a bitter taste as well as a feeling of incompleteness and total loss… Just over fifty years ago, the life of a talented boy came to a screeching halt. This comet-like life began in Kinshasa on May 27, 1944. After the death of his father, Marie-Marie was raised alone by his mother in the “Far West” neighborhood (today’s Ngiri-Ngiri......

Near the end of 1981, as the Mangwana tour came to a close, Mbilia auditioned for Tabu Ley, leader of the Congolese rumba band, Afrisa. Ley hired her on the spot, giving her the stage name Mbilia Bel.Mbilia's sexy good looks and limpid soprano revitalized Afrisa and sent its......

Stella's 32nd Airport AnniversaryMay 17 is no new date for Rhumba and Zilizopendwa music lovers. It is a commemorable day, especially for Kenyan lovers of zilizopendwa music, as this is the day that the famous Stella heart broke singer Freshly Mwamburi. It is 32 years and counting, and the song strikes fresh every 17th day of May. The classic hit always strikes a fresh memory of what the singer Freshly Mwamburi went through in his 1992 classic hit.Freshley Mwamburi, whose real name is Mwamburi Mwakachola, was born on November 7, 1958, in Wundayi, Taita. The name freshly is not a new name in the Kenyan music scene, especially with the mention of the national 17th May Stella......

SAM MANGWANA's MUSICAL JOURNEY
April 26, 2024 - 01:45 AM
SAM MANGWANA's MUSICAL JOURNEYThe angelic voice of the Legendary Sam. It’s just so smooth. It brings to mind the golden age of Congolese rhumba, though it’s tinged with nostalgia. His sweet voice keeps sounding new to the ears despite the years it reigned the musical world. Such a rich career spanning six decades just can’t be summed up in a 90-minutes. We begin by reflecting on his musical journey at the end of the 60s. Mangwana made his professional debut in 1963 with the Congo-Kinshasa rumba band, African Fiesta, owned and led by Tabu Ley Rochereau. Theo Blaise Kounkou. In the Madingo-Kayes village, located in the Republic of Congo, there lived a young boy named Theo Blaise Kounkou. From the moment he could walk, he was drawn to the beat as the streets were filled with musical rhythms. Tapping his feet to the rhythm of the drums that echoed through the streets was a norm on his childhood. This unleashed his extraordinary gift of music. From a tender age, Theo was drawn to the rhythms of life around him. He would tap his feet to the beat of the rain, hum along with the wind, and mimic the melodies of the birds in the trees. His parents, recognizing his talent, gave him a small drum, and from that day on, Theo's musical journey began. As......
