Denise Kusala Yondo, known professionally as Yondo Sister, is a Congolese musician and singer widely regarded as "the queen of soukous" and "the queen of rumba." Born on April 23, 1958, in Bukavu, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), she began her career in 1975, initially as a dancer, alongside her sister Chantal Yondo in the legendary band L'Afrisa International, led by Tabu Ley Rochereau. Rochereau is credited with encouraging her transition from dancing to singing. She later became a member of the group Soukous Stars and is strongly associated with the Kwassa Kwassa dance style and music genre. Having pursued a solo career starting around 1982, Yondo Sister became an iconic female artist of the 1980s and 90s, with popular albums including Bazo (1991), Deviation (1993), and Dernière Minute (1995). She currently resides in Paris.
