Princess Jully (Lilian Auma Aoka) was a highly influential Kenyan singer known as the "Benga Queen" or "Queen of Ohangla Music" for her mastery and modernization of the traditional Luo music genres from Nyanza Province. She began her career as a backup vocalist for the Jolly Boys Band led by her husband, Prince Jully, and took over the group's leadership following his death in 1997, skyrocketing to national fame with her iconic hit song, "Dunia Mbaya" (Bad World). This song became a critical tool in a national campaign to educate Kenyans and destigmatize people living with HIV/AIDS at the height of the epidemic in the 1990s. Throughout her career, which included releasing over 40 albums and being part of the Kenyan female supergroup "Divas of the Nile," Princess Jully used her platform for social and political activism, becoming a cultural force who preserved Luo heritage while addressing pressing societal issues.
