Rikki Ililonga, also known by his birth name Rikezo Makuyu Ililonga, is a pioneering Zambian psychedelic rock musician widely regarded as a "godfather" and a trailblazer of the 1970s Zamrock movement. He gained prominence as a founder and member of the influential band Musi-O-Tunya, who are often credited as the genre's creators, fusing Zambian rhythms with psychedelic rock, funk, and hard rock inspired by Western acts like Jimi Hendrix and Cream. Ililonga branched out as a solo artist, recording his first album, Zambia, in 1975, where he played all the instruments and vocals himself, showcasing his versatility. His songs, which include hits like "Shebeen Queen" and "Musamuseke," are sung in English and Zambian languages like Silozi and Ichibemba, acting as a powerful expression of post-colonial Zambian identity.
