Tom Malanga

Tom Malanga is a legendary Kenyan bassist and a foundational figure in the East African rumba scene, best known as a founding member of the iconic band Les Wanyika. Born in Rabai, near Mombasa, Malanga began his professional journey with Orchestra Simba Wanyika (formerly Arusha Jazz) before breaking away in 1978 alongside guitarist Omar Shabani to form Les Wanyika. His rhythmic, melodic bass lines became the "heartbeat" of some of the region's most enduring classics, including the 1979 hit "Sina Makosa" and the fan-favorite "Paulina." Throughout his career, Malanga has been instrumental in bridging Tanzanian and Kenyan musical influences, helping to define the signature "Wanyika" sound that continues to influence the East African rumba.
